In a circular economy, you can make food from industrial waste, and it is happening now

LanzaTech, IndianOil, and India’s Department of Biotechnology announced a partnership to convert CO2 emissions and renewable electricity, from their plants in India, to lipids and Omega-3 rich fatty acids, a nutritional food component.

This is important because it is the first step to convert CO2 to high-quality food ensuring not just food security but also nutrition democracy.  LanzaTech first converted industrial waste into jet fuel which Virgin Airways was the first airline to use recycled waste in flight.

LanzaTech is a carbon recycling company that uses fermentation to make new products, but instead of taking sugars and yeast to make alcohol, it takes waste carbon pollution and recycles it to make fuels, chemicals and food.

LanzaTech’s first commercial facility, operating in China has been converting steel mill emissions into ethanol that has been used for road transport, sustainable aviation fuel, packaging, and textiles. Last week LanzaTech hit a significant milestone as 100k tons of CO2 has now been avoided at this site. Additional plants under construction are in Belgium, China, Japan, South Africa, and India with IndianOil.

Faced with a climate crisis we are beginning to see new technologies help make a linear economy, circular. Through innovation and partnerships LanzaTech is able to use carbo over and over again, to make products such as fuel, and Omega-3 fatty acids, and other feedstock. Last month, LanzaTech announced a new partnership with Loreal.
