I can’t have a simple conversation with my children about the Presidential election without telling them that the GOP nominee is a bad person who made bad choices, but had lots of money to help him get to where he is now.
That a person without ideas, without substance and only hate filled speeches and rhetoric is able to rise to a position to compete for the world’s most difficult and powerful position.
Politics can be dirty, but what we have seen over the past year is simply political porn. Warnings have to be issued before newscasts. I have to stand over my children trying to get to Nikelodeon, DisneyXD or ESPN to make sure I don’t have to explain anything later, or often times I do if they heard something from a friend at school.
This was supposed to be the election I shared with my daughters in celebrating a historical shift in our nation. In teaching my son the value of leadership and to turn them on to politics and to becoming engaged in making a difference.
Instead, I find myself explaining a lot of things I would never want to talk to my children, now teens and tweens, about. It is frustrating and disturbing to watch the news or have a conversation about the presidential campaign with your children, without explaining why people make bad choices and how people who made bad choices get to run for president.
Instead, I wanted to have a conversation with my children about choices. About the differences between Democrats and Republicans, the differing political philosophies or on issues important to move our country forward – the economy, education, social services, international diplomacy and the environment. Instead, our conversations are about other things I was waiting to talk about when my children were older.
I work every day in advising people how to build, protect and promote their brand or personal reputation. I often work harder at keeping my clients out of the media as I do in front of them. In every case, I work with them to craft the messages that resonate and help them achieve their objectives.
So, with the election just weeks away, it is time to unite our country and to focus on the voters who “Dumped Trump,” to support Hillary Clinton, instead of voting for a third party candidate or independent.
It is time, the Clinton campaign focus on The Republican Party and help it fix itself.
We will never agree with everything a candidate stands for, but our vote needs to be about what is in the best interest for our country and for the world. If I were advising the Clinton campaign, I would suggest something bold. Stop focusing on your base and start focusing on the United States. Ignore your opponent. Focus on the issues and focus on piecing the U.S.A. back again.
