Podcast Feature: Fixing the Foundation of Michigan’s Behavioral Health System

In a recent MIRS podcast appearance, as Executive Director of the MI Care Council, I discussed the growing need to streamline Michigan’s behavioral health system, focusing on the structural challenges that prevent providers from delivering timely, effective care.

The discussion highlighted concerns around overlapping layers of governance among PIHPs and CMHSPs, inefficiencies in Medicaid funding distribution, and the impact these challenges have on real families and frontline clinicians.

I offered a path forward:

  • Standardized systems and assessments

  • Greater transparency and accountability in funding

  • Support for models like Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs)
